Tours
and leisure activities |
|
|
There
are many different tours and activities to keep you busy after your lessons
have finished. Here are some ideas: |
|
|
|
|
Near
Fort Augustus |
|
|
Search
for Nessie |
|
|
Nessie has been seen many times from Fort Augustus. In fact, one of the
earliest recorded sightings was at the end of the loch near the Abbey when
St Columba spotted the monster and drove her away. Since then the creature
has been seen on numerous occasions and was even spotted on land, at Inchnacardoch
(where the school is located) just outside the village. Take a boat trip
from Fort Augustus to hunt for the monster on a special sonar-equipped boat.
If you don't find Nessie you'll enjoy the beautiful views when you take
your cruise. You can also visit two exhibitions about Nessie in the town
of Drumnadrochit up the road. |

Caledonian
Canal and the locks |
|
|
This
canal runs right across Scotland, joining the North Sea to the Atlantic
Ocean. It passes through Fort Augustus. In the village you can see the locks.
This is a kind of water staircase which raises boats from the lower level
of Loch Ness to the higher level of the next section of canal. The locks
and the canal are very old. They were built in the early 1800s by the famous
engineer Thomas Telford, and still work perfectly today. |

Urquhart
Castle
|
|
|
This
dramatic ruined castle is one of the most famous sites of the Loch Ness
area. First built in about 1230, it has a long and bloody history and played
an important part in Scotland's warlike past. It last saw action in the
Jacobite wars of 1689, after which it was blown up. There is now a visitor
centre with a restaurant and a cinema show explaining the history of the
castle, so this makes a good afternoon out. |
